Sunday Afternoon Adventure

When my colleague, Karen Khaw suggested a mid-day visit (on Sunday) to the suburb of Hong Kong called Sham Shia Po to see the wholesale market dealing with ear-ring and necklace components, I agreed readily, as I do love danglers and I had seen one of Karen's handiwork in the form of a nice looking pair of dangler....but nothing had prepared me for the variety that the market had to present. It was being like "Alice in Wonderland" with each and every item in the endless line of shops, casting a spell on me and my friends who accompanied me.

The area itself is such a contrast to Central in HK, and presents the vibrant life of HK people. Crowds, Busy Streets, Old buildings, local food everywhere gave the real feel of the place. But, of course, the exciting part were the shops of beads ( of all possible sizes and colours),ear ring pieces (wooden, synthetic, stone etc), Swarovski crystals, chains of different designs.... anything you can imagine to make jewellery. While selecting the ones to finally convert them into actual ear-rings and necklaces, my brain was brimming with endless possibilities...and to think, I was in HK for over a year and never thought I could actually be making something like danglers out of isolated pieces.

Like a first timer, I bought a lot of pieces, and was waiting to try my hands on them. I reached home and get down to business, and it was an amazing feeling to convert bits and pieces on beautiful pieces of danglers (the way I like them)...and when I put them on, it was like being transported to a new world of colour and designs. I ended up making 9 danglers of different designs and 1 necklace in my first attempt.

I guess there are so many things out there, it just needs an introduction, and an entire new world opens up!!
